Flying The Beam
In the early days of flight, navigation was visual. Then a breakthrough happened with radio signals. These signals could even include radio stations. When the pilot had determined that he had acquired a signal and that the signal was at its peak, he was following that signal to his destination as he might move back and forth across the artificial channel of signal strength, the pilot was considered to be flying the beam.
