Major Otto William Buenting was assigned to the 444th Bombardment Group, 58th Wing of the 20th Air Force in World War II. Major Buenting was the Operations Officer. During his combat service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Upon the conclusion of WWII, Major Buenting, a pilot of the B-29 Superfortress "Lady Marge" flew a copy of the surrender documents to Washington D.C.. In the process, on September 1, they set a speed record from Honolulu to D.C. with an average of 285 miles per hour.
