Next Steps: First Lieutenant Avarello was the pilot of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On June 29, 1950, while on a night intruder mission, his aircraft was hit by fragments from an exploding train during a bombing run, hit power lines and crashed at Sonyu-ri, Imjin-Myun, Paju-gun 10 miles northwest of Seoul, South Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on January 25, 1954. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. ** First Lieutenant Avarello was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
