Stalag Luft

A Stalag Luft was a type of German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II specifically designated for the internment of Allied airmen. The term "Stalag" refers to a general prisoner-of-war camp, while "Luft" denotes that the camp was intended for air force personnel. These camps were part of a larger system of POW camps in Germany and were generally reserved for captured pilots and aircrew members from the Allied forces. Conditions in these camps varied, but they were often subjected to strict discipline and frequent attempts at escape by the prisoners.

During World War II, the German "Stalag Luft" camps for Allied airmen were located in various parts of Germany and its occupied territories. Here are the notable Stalag Luft camps, including their locations:

  1. Stalag Luft I: Located near Barth, in the northern part of Germany. It was situated on the Baltic Sea coast.
  2. Stalag Luft II: This camp was near the town of Stalag Luft II, which was close to the city of Greifswald in northeastern Germany.
  3. Stalag Luft III: Situated near Sagan, which is now Żagań in Poland. This camp is famous for the Great Escape in 1944.
  4. Stalag Luft IV: Located near the town of Sagan, which is now Żagań in Poland. It was situated in the eastern part of Germany.
  5. Stalag Luft VI: Found near the town of Heydekrug, now Šilutė in Lithuania, this camp was situated in the Baltic region.
  6. Stalag Luft VII: Located near the town of Moosburg in Bavaria, Germany.
  7. Stalag Luft VIII: Positioned near the town of Biberach an der Riss in southern Germany.
  8. Stalag Luft IX: This camp was located in the town of Hohenstein-Ernstthal, in Saxony, Germany.

These camps were specifically established for the detention of Allied airmen, with each location having its own unique set of conditions and experiences for the prisoners.
